Dare Not Speak
15 (or so) Years of Photos
Dare Not Speak is Sean Gillis' first published collection of personal photos. Spanning from the mid 90's up to the summer of 2011, many of the photos are being shown for the first time.
After shifting from being a painter to a photographer, Gillis became obsessed with studio photography. He insisted on only shooting in the studio, because it was the only way to completely control the light. He continued with this stance until 2002, when, for the first time since he started taking pictures, he didn't have a studio available to him.
The photos in Dare Not Speak demonstrate his transition from being a strictly studio photographer to embracing the unpredictable nature of outdoor location photography.
Opening with his dark and disturbing Voyeur series, moving into his mostly black and white studio work, then jumping into a mix of the full color, high energy, fashion photos for the Interstate Clothing Company and his more recent studio photos; the images in this collection highlight Gillis' ability to capture the varied personalities of his subjects while simultaneously creating a distinct mood for the overall photo.
